South Texas / Alamo

March 6-10, 2011

God and Texas!

Background Story

Originally named Mission San Antonio de Valero, the mission served as home to missionaries and their Indian converts for nearly seventy years.  On December 29, 1802 a hundred cavalrymen from southern Coahuila thundered into the town of San Antonio de Bexar, followed by the wives and children of the soldados.  These Spanish colonial presidio troops were called the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Alamo de Parras, which traditionally was abbreviated.  They would bequeath their name to the mission.

Throughout it's history Mexico, it seemed, was always in turmoil.  Allowing immigrants from the United States to colonize didn't help.  Eventually, these Texian immigrants demanded their independence from Mexico.  With over 2,000 soldados, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna y Perez de Lebron rode north to San Antonio to restore order and drive the norteamericanos from Texas.

In San Antonio, a mere two hundred and fifty rebels would meet him at the Alamo - and refuse to surrender!

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:

The Historic Menger Hotel (www.historicmenger.com)

Just a few steps from the Alamo and famous Riverwalk, this landmark hotel, constructed in 1859 on the Texas frontier, is reminiscent of the 1800s, of Robert E. Lee riding his horse through the lobby and Teddy Roosevelt recruiting his Rough Riders in the saloon, of General Custer visiting on December 27, 1865, not to mention Roy Rogers stabling Trigger on a second floor suite.  The lobby and restaurant is reminiscent of the Golden Age of Steamboats!  Magnificent!!

IMAX movie “Alamo … The Price of Freedom”

Victory or death … courage and valor … relive thirteen unforgettable days of history … Texas’ biggest story on Texas’ biggest screen

Alamo Village and Old San Antonio    (www.alamovillage.com)

John Wayne’s movie set from his 1960 movie “The Alamo.”

This set is still used today and is awesome (and huge)!  Both a full-scale replica of Old San Antonio and the 3-acre grounds of the 1836 Alamo compound is housed here, as well as the John Wayne Museum.

We’ll get a historic / movie tour of where Lonesome Dove, Barbarosa, Streets of Laredo and 50 other films have been shot … love this place!!

Fort Clark Tour  (www.fortclark.com)

The Old Guardhouse Museum houses relics of early Cavalry, Infantry and Indian scouts and of times on a frontier military post.

Rare insight into the life of a frontier soldier is displayed throughout.

Dinner at Enchanted Springs Ranch   (www.enchantedspringsranch.com

Located just 35 minutes from San Antonio, don’t be surprised if you see Calamity Jane, Wild Bill, Pistol Packin’ Paula or one of their exotic animals on the dusty streets of this 86-acre working ranch and Old West town, built originally for Western movies and is still used today for film productions.

Tour the Alamo (www.thealamo.org)

Few historic places are as awe-inspiring as Mission San Antonio de Valero, also known as the Alamo.  On March 6, 1836 the Alamo fell after holding off General Santa Anna and his 2,500 professional soldiers for 13 days.  Remember Crockett, Bowie, Travis … names immortal.

The weekend prior to our arrival is Texas' "Holy of Holies" and a celebration.  There will be re-enactments aplenty in the courtyard and square.  Arrive a day early and take in as much as possible while touring the Alamo chapel, long barracks and gift shop.

A guided tour by one of the foremost Alamo historians, Mark Lemon, is not to be missesd.

Lunch at the Buckhorn Saloon  (www.buckhornmuseum.com)

We’ll all need to arrive together since they are setting up a special buffet for us.

Just two blocks from the Alamo, the saloon is a step back to the Old West … wait until you see the museums … 33,000 square feet of exhibits including wildlife, frontier   firearms, handcrafted Texas cowboy antiques and their Texas Ranger Museum … a must see!!

Riverwalk (Paseo Del Rio)

San Antonio’s #1 entertainment destination … Stroll along the meandering Rio Grande River under tall cottonwood trees past shops, galleries and restaurants

Cocktail cruise

We’ll board a reserved boat and cruise the river while celebrating the Alamo and our time together … beer, wine, margaritas anyone??

Dinner at Michelino’s

This one’s special … the food is marvelous!
